audio sounds "stressed" in ubuntu

I've got this as well, it seems to be that if I open up alsamixer and
drop the values down to about half way or a little bit above then pipe
the external sound through an external amp then it sounds fine.. If I
put all the alsamixer values up very high I get normal loudness from
basic external speakers but the sound quality is complete crap.. it
sounds "over amped"
I've also noticed that my mp3 and ogg rips sound crap as well.. the
same "over amped" sound.
I'm using hoary Kubuntu and have a soundblaster card that sounds fine
under windows and other linux distro's
