Good try.  That's often the fastest way to find the answer.

So you've made sure there's a VBIOS mode setting available for that
resolution.  Hmmm.

Please attempt to start the X server with that configuration, and then
gzip and attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.  That is where clues to
what is going wrong can be found.  Perhaps you'll see what's the matter
yourself, and rather than sending it, you can summarize your findings.
