Kernel panic - Ubuntu refuses to start - What to do?

If you hit escape or enter or delete or something (I think it says while
its loading) while Grub is waiting to load, you can select which kernel
to use. Load up using that kernel and then install a different kernel.
You should get your system up and running.

Hey, if someone else checks this thread, it might be a good idea to
have Synaptic or Update Manager pop up a warning that updating the
kernel can sometimes make your system stop working and list
instructions in the warning for, if necessary, reverting to a previous
kernel version.
