fresh install no soundl

Hi all,
have just re-installed Hoary after problems with
sound in totem-xine. Here 1 day, not here the next
Allowed me to remove Windows partition so did some good.
Now have no sound with totem-xine. Have checked and not muted,
and get sound when I open thunderbird, but none otherwise,
Any suggestions would be greatfully received.
