Hi Andreas,
That is the equipment which I use for Ubuntu and Mandriva 10.0. It works well enough to suit me. I do have 256MB of RAM. I would suggest that RAM would be your best place to spend money.

I use Gnome and XFCE and am happy with both. I am not a gamer so blinding power is not an issue.

Go ahead and you will be surprised at the performance.
