XDMCP problems

Yes, display manager restarted, also tried kdm instead of gdm but the
problem remains.
There is a more fundamental problem I guess. From the commandline, as
root; I cannot startup graphical clients:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
the DISPLAY variable is set to ':0.0'...
Any input appreciated,
