new user issue

I loaded the live CD v5.04 on my Sony PCV LX1 ME desktop pentium lll with
112.0MB RAM. The fan keeps running and the curser is very slow to move. When
I click on Applications, Places, System etc the HDD light flashes but
nothing happens. I  once did load XP and the fan would not stop running.
Sony Knowledge Base suggests downloading a later fan controller version and
also fitting another 128 MB of memory. I restored ME. Any suggestions for
getting Ubumtu to work? Or do I need more memory? Thanks
