Oh dear, you are all confusing me :-/
I better stick to my original plan then, and wait a year or two before
making any purchase decision. Hopefully things will be simpler by that
time.

Then I would be very happy to use the default 'nv' driver supplied by
Ubuntu, as the machine works an awful lot better with it, than it does
with the 3D driver ! :-)
Sadly, I like to play X-Plane every now and then... so I need 3D.

Some time ago, I tried finding a 2D video card. Couldn't find one !
I wanted a super basic 10+ Euro 2D card, but to no available. Everything
was 3D and even the cheapest one cost 40 Euros, way too expensive for my
2D needs back then.
Thank God, I have since dug out my dads old Matrox Millenium II, which I
I now cherrish and keep in a safe place...

Yep, I use the on-board GeForce 2 my motherboard came with (nForce
chipset)

I don't think anyone could argue with that !! ;o)
It's like having an expensive multi-processor main board and using only
one CPU because of, say, problems with the SMP kernel or something ;o)
Having to give up functionality and/or performance of your H/W because
of S/W problems is frustrating to say the least...
