If that's the case, login from a console (by hitting “CTRL+ALT+F1”) and
run the following:
sudo rm .Xauthority
and then, logout (by typing “exit” or hitting “CTRL+D”) and go GDM or
KDM (by hitting “ALT+F7”) and try again. Tell us what you get.
