synaptic package manager

Hello,
When I would start synaptic package manager it used to
show some standard packages in applications like
openoffice. then if I wanted other programms I would
click on advanced to search and install programms. Now
though when I start it it hangs on the first stage
forever, until I clik on advanced. does anybody know
how to fix it?
