Oh, right, I'm not opposed to keeping config settings in a
well-documented text file, just that it would be nice if more
applications that use these config files *also* had a front-end screen
to assist in configuring the file and assuring correctness of the
syntax.

I would welcome those screens/tools to actually keep those settings in
well-documented text files. (The "Agent" newsreader on Windows comes
to mind, I'm sure there's loads of free-software examples too)

Yeah.. Even run SVN on it to track changes/versions sounds like a
pretty good idea.
