I think you might check the amount CPU used by the diverse applications
opened. I've got a ATI Radeon 9200 SE too.
All that's related to CD's and DVD's, whatsoever was bringing GUI
stability problems, until I configured gconf.
You could start with trying 'top' in a terminal to seek if one or other
application uses much CPU. (Alt+F1 if no GUI functions anymore, to get
a prompt)
