In /etc/dansguardian/dansguardian.conf there is a line at the beginning
of the file that has only "UNCONFIGURED".  If you remove this line,
dansguardian should start automagically at boot time. 

As for your second question about doing a transparent proxy on the same
box is a bit harder.  It involves some crazy trickery with iptables and
virtual interfaces.  I would suggest the best way to do this is to get a
second box and put it as your gateway.  At that point doing a
transparent proxy gets to be down right easy.  Also you can lock this
box up somewhere that your kids can't access.   Cause remember, if you
have physical access to a machine you can almost always gain root on it
and shut down any proxying.
