Hoary CD's DHCP didn't work

Yep I was thinking that no dhcp client was installed, not to bright of
me. Anyway I've haven't made much progress. To get a feel for ifdown and
ifup I tried them on zoe1, my working box which is Hoary upgraded from
Warty. This was interesting ifdown eth0 would bring it down but only
sometimes would ifup work, and when it didn't I had to reboot. I'm not
sure what was going on. Isn't there a boot script in /etc/init.d I could
of used instead of rebooting the whole system?
On the laptop ifup produces the same type of output as on zoe1 when the
connection was made. I'm not sure what to try now, suggestions?
