getting mozilla thunderbird to group replies

Am I missing something here? In T-bird 1.0.2 (hoary), threading is
simple with View|Sort>Threaded
View|Threads> gives options on _how_ threads are navigated, but not
whether they are sorted.
The "bubble" facilitates 1-click selection of a thread, not its
display. The "plus-in-a-box" expands (minus collapses) the thread.
