There's the digest mode, obviously, but maybe that's the "functionality" loss 
you're talking about?

I don't know if ubuntu's lists are actually on usenet, but you should be able 
to find an news-to-email gateway program in universe of multiverse that can 
act as a proxy for your newsreader.
