Thanks for the info.  gamin is installed.  It looks like an ordinary
lib (i.e., I don't see an init-script that starts a server).  Probably
it registers with the kernel...

There definitely should be a KDE-logfile or -monitor where error
messages go.  Right now debugging is only guesswork.  Just as opaque
and time-consuming as with Windows.
