Well when I look in there I see a line like the following.
(II) LoadModule: "dri"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a
(II) Module dri: vendor="X.Org Foundation"

and

drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] created "radeon" driver at busid "pci:0000:01:00.0"
(II) RADEON(0): [dri] Visual configs initialized
(II) RADEON(0): [DRI] installation complete

If your not seeing these, its a good chance the dri module is never
getting loaded or the radeon driver isn't recognizing your card.

You shouldn't have any XFree86 stuff installed. When I run "dpkg
--get-selections | grep -i xfree86" I get nothing.

If dri isn't being enabled on your hardware on a fresh hoary install, I
believe thats a bug and you might want to check out the Ubuntu bugzilla.
