I get the following.

scotth at wildfire:~$ glxinfo |grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
scotth at wildfire:~$ lspci | grep ATI
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 If [Radeon 9000] (rev 01)

So Ive got dri working and I didn't do anything special to enable it. My install is just a basic Hoary install. I didn't do anything special to get dri enabled. Do you have all of ubunut-desktop installed and did you do a desktop install from the installer? I wouldn't know why your dri wouldn't be enabled. You can check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for information as to why its not enabled.

Also to answer your other question, chances are your running xserver-xorg unless you specifically installed xserver-xfree86. Xorg is in main while XFree86 is in universe.
