I am not 100% certain this is universal, but this is not true. My main
machine has a Matrox G550 card and used to have a 17" main screen and
15" secondary screen. The main screen ran at 1280x1024 and the
secondary at 1024x768, both in 24bit. No problem at all.
As Ubuntu setup didn't seem to know about multihead, I just copied my
working config file from SuSE Pro 9.2, then all was fine. This was
with Xinerama & a single big unified desktop.
It may be a limitation of some graphics cards - I don't know, I don't
use those toy 3D accelerator things. :¬)
My advice, for what little it's worth: try to set this up under a
distro that understands multihead, such as SuSE or Xandros, and see
what they make of it.
