GPG : first run

Hi
with $gpg --gen-key i did my first key.
in the manual it was mentioned after all the steps (name, email, comment,  
passphrase) i would get in UID.
if i list the keys, i do not see any UID for me (user).
what does a UID look like?
and what went wrong here?
