synaptic strangeness

Greetings,

When I fire up Synaptic it reports there are 315 broken packages on my
system and it is unable to fix the problem. I have "held broken
packages". 
I installed some xmms packages (goom, kjofol and synasthesia), the
problem has appeared since then. If I try to get synaptic to remove
these packages it wants to remove all 315 "broken packages" (which is
more or less everything that's installed).

Anyone have any ideas?
