This is, indeed, very strange!  Are you sure they are MP3?  find out
with the command "file" from a terminal.  An MP3 file would look like
this:
        zamb ~ $ file sound.mp3
        sound.mp3: MP3 file with ID3 version 2.3.0 tag
or something similar to this:
        zamb ~ $ file sound.mp3
        sound.mp3: MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1,  48 kBits, 44.1 kHz,
        Monaural

Try installing "totem-xine" and see if it plays MP3 files okay.
