just a thought, but why don't you try 'audacity'?
it's in universe and a really cool audio-editing-app which does
recording too.it has a really clean interface, so you can check whats
going on with your mic with only one mouseclick.
theres also an audio-recorder already in ubuntu which lets you select
microphone as input, so theres really NO need to mention windows.
just check your menues.
