Ahh!  Sorry my links led you astray.  Did you keep a backup of the
original config file?  I just commented out the old version and pasted
in the new, which is often a good idea and can save some heartache. 
Maybe you can delete the config file (backup first) and it will be
recreated.  You may also try running dpkg-reconfigure on the
appropriate package, though I am not sure what package that would be.

I am not sure what the original content of your /etc/esound/esd.conf
was, but here is mine.  If they are the same, this may get you back to
normal:

##  Original Settings
[esd]
auto_spawn=0
spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 5
spawn_wait_ms=100
## default options are used in spawned and non-spawned mode
default_options=
