screen resolution stuck at 640x480 in Hoary

My desktop has a Intel 82845G/GL chipset and exhibits the same problem
with Hoary. In addition, I find that about half the time when I start
Ubuntu Warty from a power off state, X will not do a clean start up and
I get gibberish across the top of a black screen. I have to power the
system down to clear this problem as a soft restart will not clear it.
