OK, I just did it the "wiki way". I connected the USB
HotSync cradle and installed JPilot. Set the JPilot
preferences as suggested in the wiki. ls returned:

$ ls /dev/ttyUSB*
/dev/ttyUSB0

I have tried both /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1 in the
JPilot preferences and it still refuses to sync, just
like the serial cradle in GNOME Pilot. I also tried
the same procedure with the serial cable in JPilot,
setting the preferences to /dev/ttyS0 and /dev/ttyS1
The result was the same. no successful sync as of yet.

Cheers,

Brian
