debian "*.deb" vs. ubuntu "*.deb"

Debian .debs are OK, its the apt-get source you should avoid. It will
either work or complain that you have an unmet dependency (bit like
using redhat rpm). The advantage of using a .deb built for your
specific release/version of Ubuntu is you should have less unmet
dependencies.
