Totem giving error

IF I try to apt-get remove totem-gstreamer it says that apt-get will
also remove ubuntu-desktop. Does it affect to anything else? I'm a
newbie, but it seems to me that ubuntu-desktop is a pretty important
package.
If I try to install totem-xine instead (without removing
tote-gstreamer) I get that apt-get will also remove ubuntu-desktop.
DO I have to worry? What happens if I remove ubuntu-desktop?
Thanks,
Pau
