I haven't tried it myself but myself but I believe that you can just
put debian repos in the apt sources.list and do just fine. Otherwise
you could easily run a Ubuntu kernel on a debian. Have you tried many
different distros? Ubuntu isn't really built for running servers so I
can't help but feel that you might be better served by something more
geared towards server/network.
