Just typing:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales

and selecting the one that ends in UTF-8 (for your language/country of
course) should do the trick. DON'T select one that ends in UTF-8 at euro,
that will break things badly.

Then select that locale as the default locale, logout, log back in and
experience UTF-8 goodness :)
