Hey Liz,
Thanks for the response.  'uname -r' returns 2.6.10-2-k7. 
Specifically, it is the 2.6.10-8 revision (just updated to 2.6.10-9,
will see if it makes a difference, but doubt it).

I did change the permissions to root:cdrom and g+x, but the same error
continued, so I switched them back.

The issue appears to be that growisofs refuses to begin to write
because it is unable to prevent the drive from being ejected during
the write process.  This explains why it runs fine as root, but the
main thing I don't understand is why it used to work fine, but is now
telling me this.  I think I may try to reinstall dvd+rw-tools to see
if it helps.
