ubuntu printing not working

Hi again ubunters,

I've got a major printing issue going on with my warty setup, and I hope
you can help.

I've got an HP 4050TN laser printer, which is a postscript level two
printer, and it's attached via ethernet. I've got four or five other
machines running various flavors of redhat that can print to it just
fine. In short, I believe the printer is working just fine.

I've configured ubuntu via the 'Computer -> System Configuration ->
Printing dialog.

The printer is called laserjet-4050, the Manufacturer on the driver tab
is 'HP', and the selected model is 'LaserJet 4050', and the Driver is
shown as ljet4.

Under the paper tab, the paper size is set to 'US Letter', source
'Printer Default'.

When I attempt to print a test page, it spools to the printer, but the
printer halts. The job has been sent with a request for A4 paper,
rather than US Letter. 'Tray 1 load A4 paper' is the message. If I
press the big green button on the printer a couple times, the test page
will finally print.

The real problem is that OpenOffice won't print at all. If I open a
document, and select File -> Print, the LaserJet-4050 shows up in the
dialog as the selected printer, type CUPS:Laserjet-4050.

If I select OK, nothing spools to the printer. If I choose to look at
the properties for the printer, under File -> Print, then the Properties
button, that dialog looks unpopulated. There are no selections in the
'paper size' dropdown, and no selections for the paper trays.

Something oddball is happening, but I'm not sure what it is. Your
advice appreciated.
