Alternate Ubuntu Install Methods?

You say that knoppix can run on your system. I know that knoppix tends
to use a vanilla (unpatched) kernel from kernel.org (non-debianized) I
do not know how helpful this is, if only to help find a kernel from
which you can boot.
It is impractical for me to reboot my system and play with the expert
mode right now, sorry, but there must be a way to blacklist that module
before it is loaded. I think it is loaded by discover, and not hotplug.
Is there not an option to disable hardware probing, described in the F4
or F5 boot screen menu?
I'm pretty sure that you would have tried it already, but I did not see
anyone mention it in your other thread....
If you have already had the joy of installing Gentoo, installing Debian
Woody would not be _that_ painful, would it? You can do a clean
dist-upgrade from there. The only problem is that the upgraded Ubuntu
kernel's initrd may (?) try that module too?
Does Woody's 2.4.18-bf2.4 support SATA?
