you can apt-get dist-upgrade quite cleanly to hoary from all debian 
versions (currently, this might not hold for much longer I think a 
freeze is approaching)

you can probably still do quite a clean install from stable and testing 
to warty.

This is how I arrived here (x86, I installed PPC from CD) and it worked 
well.
