Personally I like to have separate / and /home partitions so that I can
do a re-install or clean install of subsequent versions or even
different distros and keep existing settings and data on my home
partition.

/ only needs a few Gigs (currently my / usage is 2.9G with 1.3G
in /var/cache/apt/archives where *.deb files are kept) and the remaining
can be used for a /home partition that holds both application setting
plus all your data files (docs, code, music, etc).

I'd prefer Ubuntu's default setup to setup a / and /home partition with
a generous 5g for root and the remaining for /home as opposed to the one
single partition.

Lex.
