changing resolution without screen

I am in this conversation thread thru another WinXP computer in my home
network.
I see there have been other people with screen resolution problems lately.
But fortunately for them, their computers defaulted to 640x480 and they can
still see what they're doing. But my screen freaked out, as another said
earlier (nearly same time as my first post) except that he was running a
LiveCD while I'm already into the installation!

I guess my problem is just with Xfree86 and my screen. So if anybody could
tell me how to exit xf86 and get back to command-line, I could then edit
some file. I'm positive my screen will work again when Warty goes back to
command-line mode.
