I have an A31p Think pad and I've never tried the live CD but the
XF86Config-4 says this about my ATI :
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. FireGL Mobility 7800
M7 (RV200 LX)"
        Driver "radeon"
        BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
        Option "AGPMode" "4"
        Option "AGPFastWrite" "True"
        Option "EnablePageFlip" "True"
        Option "Accel"
        Option "DDCMode" "True"
EndSection

What driver is your using..?
