More details on the DVD writer (a NEC 3500a one) problem:

When I try to burn with nautilus, it says:

Detailed error output from cdrecord:

/dev/hdc: FEATURE 21h is not on, engaging DAO...
/dev/hdc: reserving 714160 blocks
:-[ RESERVE TRACK failed with SK=5h/ASC=30h/ACQ=05h]: Wrong medium type
/dev/hdc: "Current Write Speed" is 2.0x1385KBps.
:-[ WRITE at LBA=0h failed with SK=5h/ASC=30h/ACQ=05h]: Wrong medium type
:-( media is not formatted or unsupported.
:-( write failed: Wrong medium type

When I use k3b, it says:

Found DVD-RW Sequential media in MAD DOG-
MD-16XDVD9. Should it be formatted?
[Yes] [No]

Yes -> opens and closes the DVD drive and reasks the same question.
No -> opens the DVD drive and asks for an empty medium.
If I click "Force" on the new dialog box (the one that asks for an
empty medium), it says:

Starting writing...
Writing speed: 2770 kb/s (2.00x)
:-( media is not formatted or unsupported.
:-( write failed: Wrong medium type
K3b detected a problem with the media.
Please try another media brand, preferable one explicitly recommended
by your writer's vendor.
Report the problem if it persists anyway.
Unable to eject media.

Note that the unit is able to burn at 16x and the DVD is able to be
burn at 8x, so it's a bit weird that the selected speed is 2x, but the
main problem is, of course, that it doesn't writes at all.

Any clues?

Thank you for your help!
