I've read and heard other people say that Evolution is as quick as
thunderbird, so there must be some variables affecting me differently.
But, yes, I do find Evolution pretty slow for IMAP compared to
thunderbird: it takes 3 or 4 times longer to get an initial view of the
folders on my IMAP server, and viewing folders with a large (2000+)
number of emails takes about twice as long.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check that out. It's a strangely
elementary thing to be missing in an otherwise quite slick email app
though.

Small, yes, (1152x864), but not really very small by non-geek/IT
standards (a surprising number of people are using 800x640 still). With
a large toolbar and 4 panes (including the silly buttons for 'mail' etc
at the bottom left corner, it really doesn't leave much room for the
mail body. Thunderbird is cleaner.
On the plus side, I like vfolders better than thunderbirds 'search
folders' implementation.
