What IMAP slowness is that? I find it to be as fast as thunderbirds
IMAP support.  But then I only use thunderbird under windows, not
linux.

Have you tried turning off the text and just having icons? I've never
seen this as a problem myself.

The simplest thing to do here is to create a vfolder.

tools->vfolder editor-> add -> "unread mail", "status" "is not"
"read", select folders if you like.

That should work, haven't used it myself as I don't want to hide my
read messages.

Another thing I've never thought about.  Do you have a very small
display? I've even added a few headers to display in normal mode and
still think it's fine.
