Thanks for the offer to help. I've obtained some blank CDRs, but this
thread didn't give me the answer that I needed after all. My precise
symtoms are as follows:
1. The Nautilus burning window doesn't pop up when I insert blank
media. I've checked Gnome's removable storage settings and they seem
OK.
2. If I manually invoke the Nautilus CD burner by choosing Places> CD
Creator, it hangs part way through the burn process. The status bar
tells me that the ISO has been created, but burning never starts.
3. If I attempt to use XCDRoast in my user name, I get this error
message when I attempt to start the burning process:
>
> Calling: /usr/lib/xcdroast/bin/xcdrwrap CDRECORD dev= "ATAPI:0,0,0"

4. If I attempt sudo xcdroast, things brighten up. A little slow
(maybe I need to manually override the speed setting), but it works:

dip, floppy, jonny, lpadmin, plugdev, scanner, video.
7. Pretty well everything else in ubuntu is wonderful. That's why I
want to be able to burn some install CDs to give to my friends!
