It takes a LOT of work to integrate desktop environments into
distributions perfectly as well as seamlessly. What you said is flawed;
KDE does NOT develop a KDE for Slackware, SuSE, Mandrake, and so on, and
Gnome does NOT develop a Gnome for Ubuntu, Fedora, and so on; the
distributions must put effort into integrating the environments into
their distributions. 

And, most people don't have tons of RAM and CPU power. KDE requires
more than Gnome, and that's why the person with the average or
below-average computer usually swings at Gnome instead.
