I think these stripes are a result from the difference between the
aspect ratio of your physical screen (4:3) and the aspect ratio of the
screen image in 1280 x 1024 (5:4). You could get rid of the stripes by
stretching the image horizontally, but that would distort the image and
make everything to look a little flat. The problem would go away if
there was a choice in the driver to set the image resolution to 1280 x
960, which would be 4:3. I've been hoping this myself, because there are
so many 19" CRT monitors around and 1280 x 960 is perhaps the best
resolution for them. This problem doesn't occur with the resolution of
1024 x 768, because it has exactly the same aspect ratio as the screen
of your monitor (4:3).
It would be interesting to know, by the way, why on earth the resolution
of 1280 x 1024 was ever invented. Anyone knows if there are any monitors
with the aspect ratio of 5:4?
