Just a few days ago I installed an nVidia FX-5500-based display adapter
to overcome some limitations of my on-board video (Intel 865). When I
powered up, I got the symptoms that Doubletwist mentioned - X tried to
start 2-3 times, then gave me an error. I logged in in text mode,
apt-installed the appropriate driver, rebooted, got the X failure
again, logged in and ran -dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86- , rebooted
one more time and all was well. (The multiple reboots should not be
necessary - I just find it easier than various obscure -modprobe-
commands.)
I will point out that I had done my "homework" - i.e. I had identified
the required driver, printed the install/config procedure, etc. -
before installing the new adapter. Worked much better than flying
blind...
