Install failed on Dell Latitude C800

Problem solved. The hint about the badly burned CD's turned out not to be
too far from the truth. It looks like it was a subtle hardware error on
the DVD/CD drive that caused the failure. I had verified the discs
earlier, as well as used the drive for other things, so it didn't occur to
me, but when I slotted in an extra cd drive in one the drivebays on the
laptop everything worked fine.
