Have you tried a full power-off and power-on (rather than just a reset) and
also try disconnecting the main as the Ethernet Chip is likely WOL
(Wake-On-LANed) and running all the time.
If the ethernet chip has crashed and is not responding this may be the only
way to reset.
Next step, does it have a cable plugged in (I know it's a stupid
question). Are there link-lights and does:
sudo mii-tool
report a link-state?
Next, if it's timing out this is probably because the interface is
configured automatically with DHCP (this will be the case if you haven't
changed anything).
So check that DHCP is responding correctly on your router, perhaps
power-cycle it as well (I know the dhcp-server on my linksys wireless router
in London crashes from time-to-time).
Do the above three steps get you any progess (last one is the most
likely).
