For me, it was just curiosity coupled with a fear of dist-upgrading to
Hoary. The Hoary Live CDs weren't working for me (X wasn't recognizing
my graphics hardware correctly), so I thought I'd give backports a
try.
To tell the truth, I hardly noticed the differences. Synaptic and
Firestarter had a few new features, but I was already using Firefox
1.0 (installed in /usr/local) and palm sync (my remaining problem with
Linux in general) still didn't really work reliably, so it wasn't
worth the hassle of undoing it later.
Once I managed to undo backports, I felt bold enough to just
dist-upgrade. Fortunately, it worked, more or less. Still have a few
niggling problems to work out (see thread on sound on other user ids),
but I expected that.
