That's because Gstreamer is apparently still in its infancy, not much
work as far as I can see...give it some time (I updated HOary yesterday
and some videos now play, so it's startin to improve).

In the meantime, go to synaptic, search for "totem". This will remove
totem-Gstreamer automatically and put another version of Totem (xine)
instead. Should improve things a lot.
It may say that it will have to remove the entire "Ubuntu-Desktop"
package, don't worry, no harm.
