usbdisk icons on desktop in Hoary

The behaviour of whether you get a removable media icon on the desktop
after hotplugging a usb drive in Hoary is still a little unpredictable.
If the drive is present when Gnome starts it will appear on the desktop
other wise you need to log out and back into the Gnome desktop for it to
appear and it always wants to take the top left corner spot even if
another icon is there so you may get two icons occupying the same spot.
So when the icons not there there's no convenient way to unmount it
prior to unplugging it other than re-starting Gnome or using the command
line. I know this has been brought up in the past but I just wondered
what the current status is and whether there are any other work
arounds.
